      I think the most interesting animal I have studied is the New Caledonian Crow. Crows are amazing- they are in a family of extremely intelligent birds. They can solve problems, count and even use tools. The New Caledonian crows are the best tool users in the family. They can use stick tools to get insects out of trees, they also use barbed leaves to make new hooked tools to move insects.

      A really clever New Caledonian crow called Betty was kept in a lab, had never seen wire before but was able to use it to make a hooked tool to get food. Their abilities are incredible. Where I worked in NC they used these abilities to escape from our aviary overnight! Wiley…
