It depends on what you do. If you work at a University like we all do, then it isn’t a great deal, but if you work for a big company you can probably get lots!
It depends what type of scientist you choose to be (biochemists, geneticists, engineers, medical and pharmaceutical scientists generally make more money than palaeontologists) and it depends where you are in your career just like every other profession. When you’re just starting out the pay is fairly low but as you progress up the career ladder it gets a lot better.
Some of the lecturers at Cambridge have very nice houses and cars so it can’t be all bad 🙂 at the moment I’m only doing a PhD so I don’t really know about the real pay.
