O gosh… that’s a really difficult one. I really don’t think I can answer and I’m not sure anyone can answer this question for you. It’s one of those that everyone needs to figure out for themselves I think.

Genes are replicators, they just want to replicate themselves. Everything from the gene for your eye colour to the gene complexes that created your brain want to replicate.

The meaning of life for most animals then is just that- reproduction. We are in a unique position as humans though. Because we are such intelligent animals and have such complex culture, we have moved beyond this ‘selfish gene’ idea. Culture means that we can assign our own meanings to life. Anything you like!

Deep, deep question. Douglas Adams says, it’s “42”!

I want to know, too. But more and more I start to think that searching for a meaning is something that humans do, it’s in our nature. Should there be a meaning in life? If so, why? I shall ask you back 😉

Hi Cookie- this may sound bleak but I don’t think there is a meaning to life. I don’t think life evolved on our planet to fulfil a purpose. However, the fact that we evolved, pretty much from a series of chances back when the Earth was young is amazing and something to be celebrated and awed by. I think human beings can create plenty of meaning in their own lives though- work, family, friends, Christmas, biscuits…….the meaning of that life is love and enjoyment and fulfilment and helping people out and leaving something positive behind you (and in my case a trail of biscuit crumbs….I do love biscuits).

Hmmm. I could try and wind evolution into this some how…but I suspect that won’t answer your question satisfactorily.

I don’t know. Perhaps this is always subjective. 🙂
