Great question! The eyes are hugely important in facial expression. Most primates don’t have much ‘sclera’ (which is the white bit of the eyeball) but we do, so small changes in muscle movements around the eyes make massive changes to how they look! Think about wide eyes when someone is scared, or crinkled eyes when they are laughing – it all tells us something about how they are feeling! 🙂
