Hi Olivia- certain insects can walk on water because of surface tension. Basically, the surface of water is more like the surface of a giant trampoline to an insect (you can observe surface tension yourself by very lightly touching the surface of water when you’re next in the bath- if you peek closely you’ll see the water rise up with your finger before plopping back down). Insects are both incredibly light but they also spread their small weight over six legs and a therefore, over a greater area- which is why they can use the surface of a pond or lake like we could use the pavement! 🙂
