• Question: do you think the large hadron collider is a useful invention and why?

      Good question!

      I do think the LHC is a useful invention because it allows physicists to conduct experiments to try to answer some really fundamental questions about the nature of our universe and our very existence! One of the experiments at the LHC will be to see if it can detect the Higgs Boson- a special particle that is thought to impart mass to other particles and is therefore one of the underpinning particles controlling the material nature of everything! The Higgs boson has never been detected before so we don’t know if our current “Standard Model” of physics is even correct! The LHC will help us to find out if we’re right! Cool stuff!

      Yes!! It is amazing. Not only is it the single biggest science experiment man has ever made but it is also the most important. It is important for a two big reasons. Firstly because humans made a machine that is bigger than a city and this is an achievement in and of itself. The second is that it is a victory for science. In the 1970s a scientist called Higgs predicted that another particle existed, one we have never seen before in an experiment but that fundamentally changed the universe just after the big bang- it is the reason we are all here! Now we can test this prediction and move his theory forward. Cern have a fantastic website that can explain about all the experiments the LHC will do (there is more than just that one!) you should take a look- you’ll be amazed!

      Absolutely! This could help answer some of the fundamental questions about how matter is formed…it is hard to predict how successful it will be, but certainly worth trying! Good question! What do you think?
