• Question: Do you go on holiday alot?

      I just got back from vacation, actually! I take a lot of long weekends (taking thursday/friday off + weekend) for camping/hiking trips and once I year I try to visit my family in Turkey for 2 weeks. I must say that I have nice boss who is flexible in vacation times as long as you do your work.

      Yup- I love holidays. You don’t make that much money as a PhD student but if you save up you can take a couple of holidays a year if you;re clever about it. Also- you get to travel a lot anyway if you’re doing a PhD since you present your research at conferences which can be held in any country the conference organisers fancy and I’ve also done fieldwork in other countries too.

      No 🙁 I can’t really afford to go on holidays. PhD students are not paid enough!! On the up side we often get to travel to go to conferences which are in some amazing places and to do research with animals or in labs that we don’t have here in Scotland and all that is paid for by the lab!

      I go to conferences in other countries a fair bit…and have the odd social holiday too!
