Well, even before its discovery Mt Everest was still the tallest mountain. But before its discovery I think the tallest mountains known to us were located in the Himalayas nonetheless. Or perhaps it was K2?

It was some Himalayan summit, most of the other tallest mountains were discovered in same decade of Everest though.
